A Look At Biblical Authority

(presented by Lee Tosti in the fall of 2012 and again in early 2015)

Lesson 1:  Habitually Assembling with Faithful Christians — a Key to Maintaining Faith!
The presentation in this recording was not done before IRcoC, but because that presentation is unavailable, this one is made available in its place.

Lesson 2:  The Basics of Authority:  SCENI — God’s Revealed Method for Discovering His Will for Us
Individuals and congregations are limited in what they may and may not do.  This implies a system or method for discovering what God requires  Reading by itself isn’t enough, otherwise, whenever we sinned we’d still offer the sacrifices of the Old testament.   So while we must read the Bible, —and the Bible is the only source we need to discover God’s will for us—, while reading we look for Declarative Statements, Commands, Examples, and Necessary Implications.  Furthermore, there is a pattern in the NT.  And “silence” can restrict (just because God didn’t expressly forbid something doesn’t automatically mean we can do it)!

Lesson 3:  Strict Compliance To God’s Law — A Labor Of Love
The Pharisees were condemned for adding to the law of God and for missing the point of the law of God —Love, but they were never condemned for being too obedient!  In fact, they were condemned for not being obedient enough.  That’s because mankind does not know how to love on our own.  And the only way for us to develop love is —while trusting His grace to save us— to strictly obey God’s law!

Lesson 4:  The Presumption Of Unnecessary Implications
Building on and developing what was said in “The Basics...” lesson:  God is full of grace, but He is also a VERY demanding God... so we had better be sure we have His permission to do what we are doing.  Otherwise....

Lesson 5:  “Generic” and “Specific” Authority, and “Expedients”
Some review, some new, and example exercises and applications.

Lesson 6:  Unity — The Last Request of our Dying Savior (Ephesians 4:1-16)
God wants His people and His congregations to be unified.  (And the only way to be unified is through consistent obedience to God’s law.  This being the case, a study on discovering God’s law for us is so very appropriate!
